Why Practice TRE®?
TRE®, or Tension and Trauma releasing Exercises, is a somatic practice that can help us release tension and trauma held in the body.
- Release tension held in the body from everyday stress as well as from traumas of the past.
- Create more resiliency in your nervous system – in other words, gain more ability to deal with stressful situations without becoming overwhelmed.
- Prevent your nervous system from becoming overwhelmed by recognizing your limits and knowing when to step back and settle down.

How Does TRE® Work?*
TRE allows us to access the body’s innate tremoring reflex, which is an ancient mechanism universal to all mammals.
This reflex is the body’s way of restoring a sense of safety and wellbeing after a stressful event has occurred. It brings us out of the physiological states induced by the fight, flight and freeze responses. These responses are the nervous system’s way of protecting us when we are in danger. When they are activated, our digestive and reproductive systems are shut down, and blood and energy are channeled into our arms, legs, heart and lungs, allowing us to fight for our life or run to safety. In the freeze response, the body shuts down and we dissociate.
Once the danger has passed, the body naturally shakes off the excess energy and restores all its systems to homeostasis, allowing us to function as normal. TRE® is a practice of giving the body permission to shake in a safe and healthy way.
The presentation in the video above is an in-depth explanation of what TRE® is and how it works. It also includes a live demonstration of TRE® that will give you an idea of what it looks like as a practice.
Please keep in mind that learning TRE® on your own is not appropriate for everyone. If you are very sensitive, have chronic anxiety, panic attacks or have experienced lots of trauma, please start by working with a certified TRE® provider.
